Sclerotherapy is a procedure designed to treat varicose veins. In this procedure, the doctor will inject a chemical (sclerosing) into a varicose vein to damage it and heal the inner lining of it, which closes the vein. It can take from 5 to 30 minutes depending on the quantity and extension of the veins
This procedure can be used to treat small spider veins to large varicose ones.
Varicose veins are a common problem among people who spend a lot of time standing or walking They are enlarged veins that appear near the surface of the skin. For most people it could only be a cosmetic issue. Having varicose veins could be painful and cause greater circulatory problems.
Sclerotherapy does not require a recovery period, since you will be able to walk after treatment. The only requirements are:
- Do not expose your legs to the sun for at least 2 weeks.
- Maintain elastic bandages on for 6 to 8 hours, the first and second day.
- Avoid weightlifting exercises.
WHAT TO EXPECT?
The injection procedure can be painful and cause cramping for a few minutes, but it will disappear quickly. After the session, you should wear compression stockings for several weeks to prevent blood from returning to your veins when you stand up.
Depending on the number of veins to be treated, you may need several sessions to treat them all.
